What is wind mitigation?

Wind mitigation refers to construction features that help a home resist hurricane-force winds, such as roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall connections, roof shape, secondary water resistance, and opening protection. An authorized mitigation inspector documents these features on Florida’s Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form (OIR-B1-1802). You submit that form to your insurance company so it can apply any discounts you qualify for.

Does Whale Roofing perform wind mitigation inspections?

Whale Roofing installs the roofing features that earn wind mitigation credits, and the inspection is completed by an authorized mitigation inspector. Under Florida law, the form can be signed by licensed home inspectors with hurricane mitigation training, certified building code inspectors, general, building, or residential contractors, engineers, and architects. Is a wind mitigation inspection required?

A wind mitigation inspection is optional for most Florida homeowners. Insurers use the completed form to apply discounts, so homes without one usually pay the full wind premium. Some insurers have their own inspection requirements for older homes or new policies, so check with your insurance agent.

Will wind mitigation lower my insurance?

Florida law requires insurers to offer discounts for homes with qualifying wind mitigation features. The amount depends on the features your home has, your insurer, and your policy. Upgrades installed during a roof replacement, like improved roof deck attachment and a secondary water barrier, can increase the credits your home qualifies for.

How long is a wind mitigation report valid?

Once your roof passes its final building inspection, schedule an inspection with an authorized mitigation inspector.
