My Safe Florida Home FAQS
What is the My Safe Florida Home Program?
The My Safe Florida Home Program is administered by the Florida Department of Financial Services. It provides eligible Florida homeowners with free wind-mitigation inspections and potential grant funding for approved improvements that strengthen homes against hurricane damage. Eligible improvements may include roof upgrades, secondary water barriers, impact-resistant windows and doors, and garage door reinforcement. Official program overview
How much grant money can I receive?
Eligible homeowners may receive up to $10,000 in grant funding, subject to available state funding. For standard matching grants, the program provides $2 for every $1 contributed by the homeowner, reimbursing up to two-thirds of eligible project costs. Eligible low-income homeowners may receive up to $10,000 without providing a matching contribution. Official grant guidance
Who is eligible for the program?
Inspection eligibility generally applies to site-built, owner-occupied Florida homes with a homestead exemption. Condominiums, mobile homes, manufactured homes, rental properties, and second homes are generally excluded from the homeowner program.
Grant eligibility has additional requirements. The home must receive an inspection through the program, have an insured value of $700,000 or less, and generally have an initial construction permit dated before January 1, 2008. Meeting the inspection requirements does not automatically guarantee grant eligibility. Current eligibility requirements
How do I apply for the grant?
Start by creating an account through the official My Safe Florida Home Participant Portal and completing the prioritization questionnaire. If placed in an inspection group, you can submit an inspection application. After the free inspection is completed, the report will identify recommended improvements and indicate whether you may qualify to submit a grant application.
Do not begin grant-related work until you have received the required program approval and reviewed the current reimbursement requirements.
Do I have to use a certain contractor?
You may select your own eligible Florida contractor. The contractor must hold an active license registered or certified through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Accepted license categories include roofing, general, building, residential, and applicable specialty contractors. The program no longer requires homeowners to choose from a designated contractor list. Official contractor requirements
How long does the process take?
There is no guaranteed completion timeline. Processing time depends on application volume, inspection-group placement, document review, inspection availability, grant approval, contractor scheduling, permitting, final inspection, and reimbursement processing. Homeowners should monitor their participant portal and email for updates throughout the process.
Can I combine this with insurance discounts?
Possibly. Completed wind-mitigation improvements may qualify your property for available insurance discounts, but savings are determined by your insurance carrier and are not guaranteed by the program or contractor. After completing the work and final inspection, provide the updated wind-mitigation documentation to your insurance agent and ask which discounts may apply.
Where can I learn more about the program?
Visit the official My Safe Florida Home website for current eligibility rules, application instructions, program updates, and portal access. Because funding and requirements may change, homeowners should confirm current information directly with the program before beginning any work.
