3-Tab Shingles: Traditionally, 3-tab shingles are made from fiberglass and asphalt coated with mineral granules. They tend to cost less than architectural shingles, however, the labor to install them due to them being more difficult to install often offsets the price. 3-tab shingles tend to be thinner, lighter, and more flimsy than architectural shingles making them less durable and weather resistant. Typical wind resistance raters for these types of shingles is only up to 60MPH.

Organic Shingles: Major manufacturers stopped producing this type of shingle over 10+ years ago. They were made from a mat of cellulose and absorbed a higher amount of water as asphalt broke down over time leaving many homes with wind and water damage.

Architectural Shingles: Architectural shingles are asphalt-based shingles that have a fine mineral granule exterior with a fiberglass backing. They are thicker and heavier than a 3-tab shingle by 50% and sport a much stronger adhesive. These tiles are more substantial and are rated to sustain high wind forces- up to double that of 3-tab shingles, making this shingle the better- quality choice to 3-tab shingles.
